With an almost imperceptible hint of nerves, Laura began:
“I cannot promise you a life of sunshine;
I cannot promise you riches, wealth or gold;
I cannot promise you an easy pathway
That leads away from change or growing old.
But I can promise you all my heart’s devotion;
A smile to chase way your tears of sorrow.
A love that’s true and ever growing;
A hand to hold in yours through each tomorrow”
Mark Twain (1835-1910)
One of the most beautiful poems ever to be read in a wedding ceremony. Made all the more special by the woman reading it, Laura. Who, according to her new wife, Faye, had taken 11 years to be escorted down the aisle! Yet from my privileged position as their wedding photographer, I simply saw two amazing women completely at ease, totally in love and extremely happy to be standing side by side, exchanging vows and beautiful, heartfelt poetry.
It can take every ounce of restraint not to get too caught up in the emotions that sweep throughout a wedding ceremony. My role is to capture those emotions so they will live on forever. Wedding photographers walk a fine line between feeling emotions and merely observing and capturing them. I think to truly capture those moments you do have to immerse yourself in order to be able to ‘surf’ the waves of emotion and anticipate their next ‘special moment’.
Laura and Faye’s wedding provided many waves of emotion, from tears to laughter; panic to elation.
Panic number 1 – ‘dress-gate’ and some swift seamstress skills required, panic number 2, their stunning cake was really close to where I would normally stand to capture the main ceremony – I can be clumsy at the best of times so I took the brave decision to change positions and the cake seemed to breathe a sigh of relief!
Laughter and elation were in abundance throughout the ceremony especially during the slideshow speech given by the best man, where some dodgy fashions were revealed in times gone by in hilarious old family photos. Laughter when the bride’s nephew, revealed he was a true Scot in a silly ‘kilt-flapping’ session (the photos didn’t make the main gallery and I kept my eyes closed throughout!!)
All these moments and more were captured, so that Laura & Faye can look back on their wonderful day and remember the bits they’d forgotten.
