If you go down to the woods today…

woodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6431ss“We’ll be shooting blanks in 30 minutes and we’ll need a 100 metre exclusion zone!” the army sergeant informed me.

Well, shooting family portraits in a wood is never boring!  The boys looked excited, the parents less so!  Luckily this is an unusual encounter and we all escaped unscathed with these fantastic photos!woodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6169sswoodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6143

I adore this family, 10 years ago we first met at my studio, full of expectation and hope, celebrating the impending arrival of their first born with some unique pregnancy portraits.  We have met many times over the years on farms, in fields as well as studios and now a prettty woods – all for photo shoots!

Each time as their family grows and matures, their children’s boundless ‘tigger style’ enthusiasm for life is a truly wonderful thing to celebrate within these images.

They LOVED having their photograph taken, jumping, running and skipping their way around the woods, peeping around trees, tickling each other and generally having a ball at my ideas for photos!  Each sibling, looking out for the other, trying to make each other giggle, holding hands or picking each other up!  I find children of this age prefer to be set free from a studio environment and as long as the weather is not a howling gale, outdoor photos are a wonderful way to capture their characters and allow them to express themselves more naturally – just the way parents prefer.woodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6217sswoodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6414

woodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6328With glorious sunshine in beautiful wood- land we whizzed through a delightful array of races and jumping competitions, culminating in an array of natural, fun family portraits and the knowledge that we escaped from the army just in time – phew!

If you would like an outdoor shoot with your family, there are a few places left on our lavender farm mini-shoots this weekend (26th and 27th June) for more details and to book – please either call me: 07976 302937 or click here.woodland family-tina-bolton-photography-6261

Naked men raise money for charity in a photoshoot

Two years ago, me and my team photographed 8 firemen for a very special calendar to raise money for charity – we eventually raised over £500.fireman-calendar-mark-tina-bolton-photography-0547

It was a tough job, but someone had to do it and together with several rather scrumptious firemen and a dedicated team of ‘assistants’ – we shot some great fireman-calendar-mark-tina-bolton-photography-0621images and had a ton of fun in the process.  Now it’s your turn…if you would like to be a part of our photographic team assisting on our next Gorgeous Men calendar shoot, we want to hear from you.  We are photographing some seriously gorgeous men (already selected – sorry chaps!) from all walks of life and want to ensure that this calendar is jammed full of images YOU want to admire throughout 2016 – but still be something you can, just about, hang on your walls!08 the making of August

To be in with a chance to win a day assisting  on the shoot with me and my team, tell us what pose you would like us to create for the calendar?

Send us your request to tina@tinabolton.co.uk by describing it in less than 200 words.  The winner will be selected by the models and myself.  You will then be invited to come along on the shoot and assist with the posing, lighting and accessorising your favourite image – we’ll even make sure it goes into your preferred month.  PLUS, you’ll also receive your own signed copy of the calendar when it’s published.  As this is a fundraising campaign, each idea must be accompanied by a donation of £5 to  Steve’s Gambian project (link below)

So what are you waiting for – come and join me and the team for a great day’s shooting!  Or in the words of Katy, my assistant, ” The best fun with my clothes on, EVER!”

So, what are you waiting for?  Donate here – please ensure you put your name and the word: ‘calendar’ so we know it’s a competition entry donation.  Send your requested poses to tina@tinabolton.co.uk

Entries close 30th May 2015 – the shoot will take place late June/early July 2015 in or around Petersfield, Hampshire.

A voice from the radio

A voice from the radio arrived in my studio today.

I love my radio, working from home, it offers company, keeps me informed and makes me laugh.  It felt like a real honour to have someone from ‘my’ radio join me in my studio!!

Sarah and Rick Jackson, are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child and had travelled up for their pregnancy shoot. At 35 weeks pregnant, Sarah was positively glowing and had a smile which lit up the studio, clearly excited about becoming a Mum.  Rick, as equally if not more excited (he showed me the 4D images on his phone!) covers the popular drive-time show on Wave 105 and is as friendly and funny in person as he is on the radio which was lovely to discover!

After a quick cuppa we discussed ideas and how best to use the fun props which included sweet little bootees, a fluffy rabbit and Tiffany box with some very special jewellery!    Props which add meaning to your pregnancy or baby shoot are always a lovely idea, but I suggest that they pass the 10 years rule…when you look back in 10 years at these photos, would you know why you had them in the shoot in the first place, if not don’t use them.  Theirs will definitely pass the 10 year rule!

jackson-bump-tina-bolton-photography-8501fb

Glances between the two of them during our shoot, showed their closeness, the way their faces lit up when their gaze landed upon the other was great to photograph, and made for a shoot full of happy vibes.

As always – I kept it simple, relaxed and fun.jackson-bump-tina-bolton-photography-fb

Looking forward to meeting their new arrival in a few weeks’ time!jackson-bump-tina-bolton-photography-8457sselfb

How to create a backdrop wall in your studio

How to create your own backdrop wall in your ‘studio’

My studio is in estate agents terms: ‘bijou and compact’, the quality of the images I produce means this is irrelevant as I am sure most photographers will agree – size doesn’t matter!

However, I wanted to have the ability to use my wonderful range of backdrops (from Photographers Floors and Backdrops in the UK) without having to take up vital space with stands and poles etc…

I wanted something that would be absolutely solid when hung and that there was no chance of it falling off the wall and landing on to a client.  It had to be straight which is why I used a baton to secure the hooks to the wall, as I only then had to make sure the hooks lined up on the already straight baton.

So here’s how I transformed my walls!

You will need:

  • Backdrop(s) of the SAME height
  • Sharp scissors
  • Eyelet rings (the ones you use for curtains – standard size or bigger)
  • Thin wooden baton slightly wider than the width of your backdrop and thick enough to hold hooks.
  • 5 hooks that screw into the above baton – bear in mind that they may be at eye height so something safe not sharp.
  • Drill, raw plugs, wall screws and spirit level and relevant safety equipment.
  • Floor space big enough to lay out your backdrops flat.
  • A helpful person!

step-1-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-4sqStep 1

Measure the spaces where you want the rings to be.  In my 5ft width backdrop I used 5 rings.  Using the rings as a template.  Make sure each ring is the same distance from the top to ensure they all hang at the same height on the backdrop.

step-2-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-5sqStep 2

Cut out the holes for the eyelets – cut the holes slightly bigger than the circle you drew.

step-3-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-3sqStep 3

Separate the eyelet rings (use closed scissors to unclip them) and push the ring with the spikes through the hole to ensure a good grip and click the other half on.  Eyelets are usually designed for quite thick fabrics and they went through the vinyl quite easily.

Repeat steps 1-3 until you are happy that you have enough eyelet rings to provide safe hooks.

step-5-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-6sqStep 4

Prepare your baton to the correct length (paint it the matching colour you want and leave to dry) then mark out where it’s going to go using a spirit level to ensure it is perfectly straight.  Mark out your holes, drill, apply raw plugs.

Before you fix your baton to the wall, place it on the floor and place your first prepared backdrop over it and line up the edges and where your hooks will go in relation to the eyelet holes – mark them up.

Now fix the baton to the wall. (I used three screws – one either end plus a central one.)

step-4-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-10sqStep 5

Attach your hooks to the baton

step-8-backdrop-tina-bolton-photography-8sq

Step 6

Hang your backdrops!  With the single door hooks I can hang three backdrops.

Points to note:

Since hanging the backdrops I would advise the following:  create a baton with three extra hooks spaced apart as before – then this will make it easier to swap your backdrops around.

The eyelet rings means they will not roll up as neatly for the tubes as before but you can either tie them once rolled, or simply unclip the eyelet rings temporarily.  I use the bottom of the backdrop with velcro to attach to a backdrop and pole system when needed at a mobile event.
