Well, shooting family portraits in a wood is never boring! The boys looked excited, the parents less so! Luckily this is an unusual encounter and we all escaped unscathed with these fantastic photos!
I adore this family, 10 years ago we first met at my studio, full of expectation and hope, celebrating the impending arrival of their first born with some unique pregnancy portraits. We have met many times over the years on farms, in fields as well as studios and now a prettty woods – all for photo shoots!
Each time as their family grows and matures, their children’s boundless ‘tigger style’ enthusiasm for life is a truly wonderful thing to celebrate within these images.
They LOVED having their photograph taken, jumping, running and skipping their way around the woods, peeping around trees, tickling each other and generally having a ball at my ideas for photos! Each sibling, looking out for the other, trying to make each other giggle, holding hands or picking each other up! I find children of this age prefer to be set free from a studio environment and as long as the weather is not a howling gale, outdoor photos are a wonderful way to capture their characters and allow them to express themselves more naturally – just the way parents prefer.
With glorious sunshine in beautiful wood- land we whizzed through a delightful array of races and jumping competitions, culminating in an array of natural, fun family portraits and the knowledge that we escaped from the army just in time – phew!
If you would like an outdoor shoot with your family, there are a few places left on our lavender farm mini-shoots this weekend (26th and 27th June) for more details and to book – please either call me: 07976 302937 or click here.
Two years ago, me and my team photographed 8 firemen for a very special calendar to raise money for charity – we eventually raised over £500.
It was a tough job, but someone had to do it and together with several rather scrumptious firemen and a dedicated team of ‘assistants’ – we shot some great images and had a ton of fun in the process. Now it’s your turn…if you would like to be a part of our photographic team assisting on our next Gorgeous Men calendar shoot, we want to hear from you. We are photographing some seriously gorgeous men (already selected – sorry chaps!) from all walks of life and want to ensure that this calendar is jammed full of images YOU want to admire throughout 2016 – but still be something you can, just about, hang on your walls!
To be in with a chance to win a day assisting on the shoot with me and my team, tell us what pose you would like us to create for the calendar?
Send us your request to email@example.com by describing it in less than 200 words. The winner will be selected by the models and myself. You will then be invited to come along on the shoot and assist with the posing, lighting and accessorising your favourite image – we’ll even make sure it goes into your preferred month. PLUS, you’ll also receive your own signed copy of the calendar when it’s published. As this is a fundraising campaign, each idea must be accompanied by a donation of £5 to Steve’s Gambian project (link below)
So what are you waiting for – come and join me and the team for a great day’s shooting! Or in the words of Katy, my assistant, ” The best fun with my clothes on, EVER!”
Entries close 30th May 2015 – the shoot will take place late June/early July 2015 in or around Petersfield, Hampshire.
And, thank you for taking part. See you there!
Terms and Conditions:
All entries must be accompanied by a £5 donation to the Gambian project above, donating more won’t increase your chances of winning BUT it will be very much appreciated! There is no limit to the amount of entries, but each one must have a £5 donation
Judges decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Lewd, pornographic or overly suggestive entries will not be considered – keep those ones to yourself, please!
Entries to be sent to the above email address by the 30th May 2015, any entries received after this date will not be considered, but we will be very grateful for your donations.
All entries will be given careful consideration, we reserve the right to utilise some or all of the ideas.
You will cover your own travel costs to and from the shoot location which will be close to Petersfield, Hampshire, UK
Over 18’s only
How much of an active part do you play in your family’s professional photo shoots? Do you sit back and let the photographer get on with it, or do you hover and check out what they are doing and even join in?
As a parent you can make or break a professional photo shoot of you and your family.
Now, I am not suggesting that without your help the shoot wouldn’t go so well, far from it, I am encouraging you to take a really active part in your next professional photo shoot. Following on from our recent blog about how to get children to smile, photographers who conduct family shoots, should know a lot of the ‘tricks’ I have already mentioned. However, when it comes to getting a group or even a single child to laugh, a shoot really benefits from some silly antics from you AND your photographer.
Why? I hear you ask? You’ve paid a lot of money for a professional to come and do something you want done to the highest of standards and of course YOU can be in the shots as well this time.
Well, who do you think a 2 year old is going to find funnier? Your photographer (who has just met them and is using a big black thing in front of their face) or YOU their parent doing silly things behind the photographer and thus distracting them from what is happening!?
As well as chatting to children in order to get to know them and tune in with them quickly, a good photographer will also make sure that they tune into the parents too, in order to make sure everyone has fun.
I encourage my clients to do silly things behind me, so when I am taking shots, I will quickly turnaround and pretend to be ‘cross’ that the parents are being ‘naughty‘ behind my back but it really does make the children laugh. Getting into the spirit and fun of a family photo shoot is also part of the experience. How often do you just simply act like a kid again with your kids? Try it. It’s very liberating, funny plus your kids will love you for it (unless they’re teenagers, in which case DON’T!!)
In a recent shoot, the parents joined in with my rendition of ‘I’d like to move it, move it’ dance from Madagascar, which the children adored! Despite not being able to hold a note, I will sing for the children (yes, really!) songs such as ‘Wheels on the Bus’ or ‘Wind the Bobbin Up’ so that they smile, sit still or join in but I have to say it’s always a relief if a parent sings with me!!
Look at these examples, the first image is a group of cousins who I had just set up in a way that I knew would look great and that they could interact well.
Then I asked the parents to do ‘Parents Got Talent’ behind me……..this was the result!!
So next time you book a photographer, go with the flow and if they encourage you to be silly, go on do it! It’s not as if the photographer can see you or capture you doing it as they should be concentrating on your children! Plus – I won’t tell anyone!
Of course, if you are doing the photography, then you can see how effective some help working on your behalf behind you can be!

This is a question I am asked most often. The answer I usually give is it is your choice. I love photographing children, who are capable of walking, out and about – jumping, chasing, exploring. The light is usually great and you can capture them in a very natural environment. Sometimes though, a cleaner, ‘white’ look is required – in the style of the iconic GAP ads. If you are considering a shoot and don’t think your home is suitable, think again! The majority of my work is in client’s homes. Some of these shots are most definitely taken on location, but which were taken in the studio?
Mind you they are very quick and thankfully not interested in me! Hopefully this means a bumper crop of apples for us come September!
